Otak Otak Place

I’ve passed this place a thousand times but never quite had the urge to find out what the fuss was all about. Until I read some reviews on people’s blogs.

Located at the new wing of One Utama (near where the old Giant was), I must say the place itself looks quite inviting with displays of stuff from yesteryears. So yeah, it’s a place to get nostalgic and relive those memories of Happy Family, Pick Up Sticks and VHS tapes (you’ll know what I mean when you get there).

Being an Otak Otak place though doesn’t mean that’s all they serve. Good news is (at least for me), they’ve got quite a number of dishes from my home state, Johor, including Nasi Beriyani Dam, Mee Bandung, and Mee Rebus!

The drinks are pretty imaginative too. I ordered Blackcurrant Longan an it was quite good, although it lacked a certain kick that I thought it’d deliver.

Of course we ordered some good ‘ol Otak Otak. Verdict? Yeah, it can pass off as Otak Otak Kempas, although not as spicy and generous in portion.

For my own main course, I ordered Mee Rebus (but of course). Labeled as “Mee Rebus Stulang”, I just had to try it out to see if it was the real thing, although I had initially wanted to order something else.

Well, it was not quite the real thing. The main ingredients were there, but the gravy was not quite smooth enough and tasted too peanut-y. And it was missing the all-important magic ingredient, the krak kruk i.e.: crunchy fitters laid on top of the mee. So, quite a disappointment there.

My makan partner had something original, Otak Otak Burger. With baked beans and wedges on the side, the burger needed some getting used to, but I’d rate it as the best thing we had that evening. The Otak Otak patty was thick and the whole dish was very filling. Good value for money indeed.

Overall, I must say this first visit only 6/10. But I’ll definitely be back to try out some of the other offerings…
